St. Augustine School students are well-represented on the honor roll at Archbishop Carroll High School.

One of two Archdiocese of Washington-run high schools, Archbishop Carroll sits atop Harewood Road, N.E., a short walk from the campus of Catholic University of America. Six St. Augustine School alumni have ascended those heights and are 2011-2012 honor roll students at Archbishop Carroll, while a seventh graduated last week from Carroll with a 3.8 GPA.

At the May 17 Honors Convention at Archbishop Carroll, Gami-Lou Beli ’10, Precious Iloka ’11, Fanta Kabia ’10, Sena Negera ’10, Markita Reed ’08, and Messai Tadesse ’11 all received the Persistence in Education Award for being on the honor roll for three consecutive quarters, according to Kimberly R. Burks, vice president for student affairs at Carroll. More than 10 percent of the Principal’s List and Distinguished Honors students at Archbishop Carroll for the first quarter, were St. Augustine Catholic School alumni.

“Saint Augustine mainly prepared me in the aspects of Math, English, Science, and Social Studies allowing me to go in to my freshmen year as an Augustine Scholar with all honors classes, including Honors Conc. Physics, Honors Algebra 1, Honors English 1, Honors Foundations of Civilizations, and many others,” Messai said.

“Students from St. Augustine that come to Carroll have consistently stepped up to the challenge of Carroll’s rigorous college prep and (International Baccalaureate) curriculum,” Burks said. “We have been pleased not only with their academic prowess but their commitment to the community and their ability to think critically, creatively, and morally so that they can serve God with purpose,” she said.

Sena, Gami, and Fanta are taking courses through Archbishop Carroll’s prestigious International Baccaleaureate program at Archbishop Carroll, according to Burks. Sena is a full diploma candidate, while Gami and Fanta are certificate candidates, she said.

The St. Augustine young alumni are taking on other leadership roles on campus. According to Burks, Sena was recently elected to the Student Council as Junior Class Treasurer, while Gami has been elected Student Council Historian.

The St. Augustine students’ success has not passed unnoticed at the parish. During the May 20 Holy Name Society breakfast, Michael S. Riley ’65, whose grandson John Riley ’11 attends Archbishop Carroll, told 100 or so gathered attendees that he’d attended the May 17 Honors Convention and recognized a number of awardees as St. Augustine School alumni.

Sheku Kabia ’08, meanwhile, graduated on May 24 from Archbishop Carroll with a 3.8 GPA, and he plans to attend University of Maryland College Park, he said. Fellow graduate Markita Reed ’08 has received admissions offers at Lincoln University and St. John’s University. Sister Gloria Agumagu, HHCJ, principal of St. Augustine, attended the Archbishop Carroll graduation ceremony at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as a guest of the Kabia family.

“During his tenure at Carroll, Sheku has been an outstanding student,” Burks said. “He has not only dedicated himself to his studies but to the Metal Lions Robotics Team. His interest in robotics has led him to pursue a career in engineering.”

Other St. Augustine School alumni are studying at Benjamin Banneker, DeMatha Catholic High School, Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts, Georgetown Visitation, Gonzaga College High School, St. Anselm’s Abbey, St. John’s College High School, and Sidwell Friends School.
